OUR PHILOSOPHY - Teaching the fundamentals - Caring for the environment

"Close your eyes... feel the wind. Use your senses, forget the instruments.
This is what sailing is all about!"

| COMPETENCY - SELF RELIANCE |
"Close your eyes, feel the wind." This concept helped many students learn to sail on Sydney Harbour where the school is based, right to around the world where many have been. By understanding that sailing is about harmony between the sea and people, students learn to respect the sea, hence to function efficiently in a safe environment. This philosophy helped the school develop successfully with a strong individuality.
Think of the Islands where people sail with practically nothing, barehanded: meaning without equipment and always improvising. There everything is simple and sailors make do with little because they can feel the wind, and know how to handle their vessels. So could you!
The main thing is to learn how to handle a vessel, then you can go sailing. Our role is to teach the fundamentals to help you realise your dream; and only later when you know how to feel the wind and handle your vessel should you acquire the equipment and the instruments.
To achieve this, the same highly qualified and experienced instructor will teach you the syllabus for the duration of your course. By identifying your limitations, working within those limitations yet expanding them during training, the instructor will follow your progression and work with you towards achieving your goal. Later we will introduce you to others' experience.
We limit the number of students on board to ensure everyone works at all times. This method has proved highly successful, quickly raising our students to a high standard of profiency. It is a radical move from the policy of passing students from one instructor to another in crowded vessels as it happens often.

Results
A number of our students, including many couples with children, have been involved successfully, or are currently involved, in long distance ocean passages worldwide. Others are involved in first exeptional adventure projects
What about sailing after courses?
All our students who have completed practical courses benefit from a free membership to the Pyrmont Heritage Boating Club. This allows to practice sailing on tradional wooden boats, which are part of Australian maritime history. Ask for details...
