Salling with Attitude: Teaching the fundamentals - Caring for the environment

"Close your eyes... feel the wind. Use your senses, and believe in yourself. This is what outdoor lifestyle and adventure are all about!"

SELF SUFFICIENCY - COMPETENCY - WILL TO ENJOY LIFE AND NATURE

"Close your eyes, feel the wind." This thinking helped many students learn to sail on Sydney Harbour where the school started ten years ago, right to around the world where many have been. By understanding that sailing is about harmony between the sea and people, students learn to respect the sea, hence function efficiently in a safe environment. This philosophy helped the school develop successfully with a strong individuality.

We have introduced some major changes to take a well-proven concept into a new era.

By expending the sailing school into an Outdoor Sports & Adventure Centre, we are promoting lifestyle. Although the core of our activities remains sailing, we are introducing other activities, such as sea-kayaking, mountain & cross-country bike riding, trekking, skiing and climbing. (We are even working on a special horse-riding project). Keeping healthy and fit is essential; hence, we are also introducing diet, nutrition and fitness into our programmes. This new concept allows Sailing with Attitude’s students or members to plan a range of activities with adequate support to enjoy outdoor lifestyle in a challenging manner.

Some are planning to sail the Southern Ocean, make a film in Antarctica, paddle across Bass Strait, take a bike to the top of the ranges, ski ice & powder away from the slopes or look at Everest from very close. Others are planning that family sail into the sunshine, a paddle in Pittwater, or a nice weekend trekking in the mountains. We all have different goals, yet we have one thing in common: we are getting out there to do what we like most.

"Remember the mental process that guides us in cruising: if you have to choose between something simple and something complicated, pick up what's simple. Setting up will be cheap, faster, and most importantly repairs can be made for next to nothing with whatever you have on board, at sea or in out-of-the-way places. That way you can sail with peace of mind, and safely come and go as you please."

Training attitude

The main thing is to learn how to handle a vessel, then you can go sailing.

Our role is to teach the fundamentals and use coaching and mentoring to help you realise your dream. Only later when you know how to feel the wind and handle your vessel should you acquire the equipment and the instruments.

To achieve this, the same highly qualified and experienced instructor will teach you the syllabus for the duration of your course. By identifying your limitations, working within those limitations yet expanding them during training, the instructor will follow your progression and work with you towards achieving your goal. Later we will introduce you to others' experience.

Limiting the number of students per class is another important element to keep a strong interaction between participants and intructors.
