Requirements for each level certifications:
Competent Crew certificate
Inshore Skipper certificate
Requirements for direct assessment:

Candidate must have been an active crew member for 25 days on board a sailing vessel in commission, including 500 miles on tidal/estuary waters and 12 hours night watchkeeping.
Note: Candidates who do not hold a certificate for satisfactory course completion for the shorebased course, must undergo a written or oral examination prior to examination afloat.
International Yachtmaster Coastal certificate

Candidates should have logged 30 days and 800 miles including 2 days as watch leader/captain and 12 hours underway on watch at night. Evidenceof successful completion of prior approved training courses provided by an accepted and accredited body may allow the mileage requirement to be reduced to 500 nautical miles.

Candidates may sit the course prior to obtaining the minimum sea time. However, they will not be issued their IYT Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate until all the requirements have been met.

Verification of yachting experience must be signed by the captain of the yacht on which the candidate was sailing. Candidates claiming sea time during times when they were acting as captain may sign their own entries, but will need independent proof that can be verified by IYT.
International Yachtmaster Offshore certificate

Candidates must have logged 50 days onboard a yacht at sea as an active member of the crew. A day is defined as 24 consecutive hours. Parts of a day can be included in this total. The term "at sea" is defined as being on a vessel outside any harbour.

Candidates must also have logged 3,000 in a yacht while cruising at sea. this mileage must be logged on genuines cruises or passages but not day trips. At least 2,000 miles muct have been completed on coastal voyages and not Ocean crossings.

Candidates must have five passages with rhumb lines of over 60 miles, two of which the candidate must have been the captain or watchkeeper during the passage.

30 hours on watch at night as an active member of a yacht's crew. For at least six hours of this night-time experience, the candidate must have been acting as the vessel's captain/watchleader.

A current Medical Exam and Eyesight Test which allow the participant to perform safely the relevant duties on a yacht.

International Yachtmaster Ocean certificate
The Ocean Yachtmaster Certificate is a qualification indicating that the holder has sufficient knowledge and experience to navigate globally using celestial navigation. The certificate holder must be able to manage a vessel in adverse conditions far away from assistance. It is restricted to current holders of a valid and recognised Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate
The shorebased course consists of 5 days of theory, class work and assessments.

After been examined successfully on the contents of the shorebased Ocean Yachtmaster certificate the candidate will have to complete the practical part of the certificate. This will include a non-stop qualifying Ocean passage of a minimum rhumb line of 600 continuous nautical miles at sea, out of sight of land, of which 400 miles must be at least 150 miles from land. During the passage, the candidate must use only astronavigation. The use of any programmable calculator is forbidden.

During the qualifying passage the candidate must have acted in a responsible capacity such as captain, mate or watchkeeper; and taken a full part in the navigation and passage-making decisions

All navigational information, including recorded observations, plotting sheets, calculations and logs must be recorded and kept to be presented to the examiner who will re-construct the passage based on the candidate's records. An oral interview may be also required.
