Coastal Navigation / Pilotage

Understanding the weather

Outcome: to provide an overview of and general understanding of coastal navigation, pilotage and the principles required for safe passages and visiting new ports. Ideal for skippers and crew wishing to extend their knowledge.

Morning (3-hours):

  • Positions on Earth

  • Calculations of Lat/Long, plotting

  • Distance/Time/Speed - ETA (Expected Time of Arrival)

  • DR (Dead Reckoning)

  • Position fixing

  • Running fix

  • Currents - Tides calculations

Afternoon Practical onboard (3-hours):

There are no prior requirements for this course. This is an intensive syllabus with notes given on a cd. Much of it will be based on practical examples

What makes a weather Systems? What's this type of clouds telling? Why was that squall not predicted? All issues we shall look at in this intensive practical worshop. No electronic to start with.

In this six-hours workshop, students will learn to indentify the type of weather system they are experiencing, where are they located in this system and what is likely to happen in the next two days.

Bars & Breakers

Understanding sails and rigs

 

This workshop focusses on the dangers involved in crossing bars and the fundamentals for correct and safe procedures.

Topics:

  • How bars are formed? What makes a bar dangerous? Safety procedures and preparation. Risk assessment. Vessel handling. Broaching. Emergencies.

We use a lot of visual material during these workshops, which are conducted at the Sydney Fish Market Marina.Students must remember this workshop is an aid not a substitute for experience. Bookings are essential.

Sails & Rigs: what are they? materials; technology; design; performance. Sail repairs: the ideal kit and how to use it (examples). Heavy weather sails. Heavy weather equipment.

Hand-on events with practical demonstrations and exercises for all participants.

Man Overboard & Lifting Recovery Systems (MOB) workshop

This workshop addresses the practical aspect of recovering and lifting people from the water. Students learn about rigging lifting equipment to suit specific conditions and practice recovering a person from the water.


Marine engine diesel



We are conducting monthly workshops on all aspects of marine diesel and auxiliary systems for yachts of all sizes (small & large) and motor vessels.

Our lecturers are sea-going Marine Engineers with years of experience of all ship board practices.

These workshops aim mostly at demystifying all aspects of the diesel engine and auxiliary systems on yachts and motor cruisers. There will be a strong emphasis on troubleshooting. No prior knowledge required.
