Course outcome - to provide an overview of and general understanding of coastal navigation, pilotage and the principles required for safe passages and visiting new ports. Ideal for skippers and crew wishing to extend their knowledge. This course is an ideal preparation for our Advanced Ocean Navigation Course. See sidebar to right.
Topics: Morning (3-hours):
- Positions on Earth
- Calculations of Lat/Long, plotting
- Distance/Time/Speed - ETA (Expected Time of Arrival)
- DR (Dead Reckoning)
- Position fixing
- Running fix
- Currents - Tides calculations
(Lunch Break)

Afternoon Practical onboard (3-hours):
There are no prior requirements for this course. This is an intensive syllabus with notes given on a cd. It is not a substitute to a regular course, yet it will give students a lot of valuable information. Much of it will be based on practical examples

Students participating in our courses are invited to attend.

We are now including in our seamanship classes exercises addressing the practical aspect of recovering and lifting people from the water. Students learn about rigging lifting equipment to suit specific conditions and practice recovering a person from the water. In this process, we are testing new techniques to maximise the chances of success for these difficult operations.

Advanced Ocean Navigation
We offer an Ocean Navigation programme.
This course runs over five full days (one day per week with extensive homework between classes).

Topics: identification of weather systems (highs/lows). Cloud identification. Relationship between elements including clouds, wind, humidity, temperature etc.. for forecasting. Lots of visual material will be used in this course
